Shippo is seeking a Legal Director, Commercial to join their team as a strategic business partner and commercial, marketing & product attorney. The ideal candidate will have proven expertise in leading complex commercial negotiations, delivering value-driven legal counsel, and working knowledge of at least two legal areas such as marketing, intellectual property, or privacy law. They will collaborate with cross-functional teams, develop and refine legal strategies, provide sound legal counsel, and contribute to the development of legal processes and operational workflows. You are a strategic business partner who also happens to be an excellent commercial, marketing & product attorney. As a member of Shippo’s small and scrappy Legal Team, you’ll cover a lot of ground. You’ll help the business close meaningful partnership and commercial deals, play a key role in counseling the business on managing risk, and assist in developing our compliance strategies. You will have the opportunity to help build the legal function as it grows and scales, as well as the larger business. You will report to our General Counsel and work closely with the extended leadership team and broader organization.
Our ideal candidate has negotiated business-critical agreements and is a strong problem-solver, creatively finding paths around obstacles. You have a proven track-record of giving business-focused advice and a practical approach to assessing risk. You thrive in a fast-paced environment, are capable of managing multiple projects at once, and are a team-player. You understand that building strong, trusting relationships is the cornerstone of effective legal counseling.
Shipping & handling responsibilities:
- Support business objectives by strategizing, drafting, redlining, and negotiating a wide range of commercial agreements.
- Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams - including product, marketing, finance, and security - to identify and assess legal risks while enabling practical, business-driven solutions.
- Develop and refine legal and regulatory strategies to address emerging challenges.
- Provide sound legal counsel that balances legal exposure with business priorities and risk tolerance.
- Contribute to the development and optimization of legal processes and operational workflows to enhance efficiency and scalability.
- Uphold the highest standards of integrity, foster a culture of inclusion, and promote a welcoming and respectful work environment.
- Engage in continuous learning and knowledge sharing within the legal team to support collective growth and development.
Requirements
- Proven expertise in leading complex commercial negotiations.
- Demonstrated ability to deliver value-driven, business-oriented legal counsel to product and technology teams.
- Working knowledge in at least two of the following legal areas: marketing, intellectual property, or privacy law.
- Experience providing timely, pragmatic legal advice to executive leadership.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong ability to quickly learn and navigate new legal domains.
- Comfort with ambiguity and a proactive approach to seeking clarity through inquiry.
- Entrepreneurial mindset with a high degree of ownership and a solution-oriented approach.
- Excellent judgment in prioritizing tasks, managing risk, and determining when to escalate decisions.

$206,000 - $279,000 a year
Our Compensation Shippolicy:
We believe compensation is a custom experience and are commited to fair and equitable compensation practices. The standard base pay range for this role is min $206k to a max $279k annual salary (standard range). We tend to anchor our offers in the mid point ($243k). Since we are focused on hiring Shippos Everywhere, we have 2 US pay ranges, a standard compensation range for the majority of the US and a standard +1 compensation range for those who live in areas where the cost of labor is higher, such as NYC and California.
The actual base pay is dependent upon many factors, such as: financial budgets, work experience, training, transferable skills, business needs, and market value. The base pay salary ranges are subject to change and may be modified in the future. Total compensation for this role will include, equity, medical, dental, vision and other benefits noted in our Shippos “package” section.
